Exterminator spraying next to base of floor with insect repellant

Whether they’re sneaking in through the walls or you’ve accidentally brought them into your home, one thing’s for sure: no one wants swarms of ants in their house! In desperation to get rid of the infestation, you’ve likely bought a can of Raid or two to spray on sight. And with these sprays being marketed for indoor use, why turn to anything else?

However, using an exterminator instead of Raid is a much safer and more effective alternative to eliminating those pesky ants. Read on to discover why using an exterminator is your best course of action:

  • Raid can worsen the problem. Raid kills ants on sight, but it also acts as a repellant. Though this may sound positive, repellant can cause panic in the ant nest, causing the colony to produce at an even higher rate than before. It may even split into several smaller colonies, known as “budding,” which can spread the infestation to even more parts of the house, worsening the issue overall.
  • It doesn’t fix the cause of the problem. Because Raid kills the ants immediately when sprayed, it doesn’t fix the cause of the problem. To truly get rid of ants and prevent another infestation, you’ll need to locate where the ants are coming from and exterminate them from there. It will take much more than just a can of Raid—an exterminator can professionally search your home for the colony’s location and safely eliminate it while ensuring the ants won’t return.
  • Aerosol cans are dangerous. Raid comes in an aerosol can, releasing toxic fumes into your home’s air when you use it. Remember, these pesticides are hazardous enough to kill ants immediately, making them unsafe for breathing in. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that after spraying indoor pesticides like these, you should vacate the area for two (2) hours and leave windows open for another two (2) hours to allow fresh air to come in—something that most people do not do when using Raid. Exterminators will tell you how and when to vacate and clean your house when fumigating your home so that you can safely re-enter your house without having to worry about a thing.
  • The fumes are potent. Not only are the fumes dangerous, but they’re also quite powerful! The odor can stay in your home for days. You can completely avoid this by having an exterminator do the job.
